確か札幌Ciscoで売れ残ったのを安く購入した記憶有り。コンセプトアルバムらしく、良くデザインされた意味不明な問題集やチャート、ポスター等の大量のオマケが、12インチ2枚と共に不必要な大きさの紙箱に入ったシロモノ。ほぼ聴くこと無く26年経過し今回初めて聴くに至るが、思いのほか良い出来で結構楽しめた。彼らは英バンドだが同国XTCや独Ata Tak等に顕著だったように、本盤での初期録音には芽吹き始めたテクノポップ黎明期の一部が垣間見られる。片面ずつ「過去」から「未来」まで４つのパートに分かれているが、録音も古い順から収録されているようで、特に初期の粒子の粗い仕上がりが気に入っている。You TubeにOGWT (Old Glay Whistle Test)に出演時の映像があったが、OGWTでは珍しく凝ったセットでの収録。此のようなアイデアと、こだわった稚拙さが当時のトレンドでもあった。

ちょうど3年前に記したの本アルバムだが、其の後友人のBarで不意に聴いたNujabes "Latitude (2003)"でGigi Masin"Clouds"がサンプリングされていた。またBjörk "It's in Our Hands (2003)"とTo Rococo Rot "Die Dinge des Lebens (1999)"でも同曲がサンプリングされている。

リリースされてから21年間、このアルバムをメディアで見たことがないのが不思議だ。This Heat後も、力強い演奏と唄声が素晴らしいCharles Haywardだが、ここでは環境音等のドローン中心のスタイル。

特筆すべきはGigi Masin。涙が出るほど素晴らしい。

"In May 1997 Lo Recordings received a DAT tape containing 30 different one-minute guitar pieces by Thurston Moore. Each piece was copied onto individual tapes and packaged in custom designed vaccum cleaner bags. One hundred bags were sent out to a selection of visual artists and musicans, inviting them to create a brand new work utilising the original piece as a starting point.

This CD contains 25 of the musical contributions plus a selection of images from The Root Exhibition - Held at Chisenhale Gallery and organized by Lo Recordings in association with commercial too."
